Individual Concerns
Sexual identity issues may cause confusion and create anxiety. Clarifying ones sexual orientation includes looking at both identity and behavior. Counseling focuses an individual on understanding their unique way of being in the world and allows them to move forward in their life in a healthy productive way. Self-acceptance is key to feeling fulfilled and to being successful in relationships.
Coming Out To Others
The decision to come out to family, friends or to straight spouses and children is an extremely difficult one. There is not one rule of thumb but many alternatives depending on the situation. Each person and each situation is unique and deserves a focus and plan that is appropriate and respectful.
Straight Spouses
Discovering that a spouse is gay or lesbian creates major upheaval in a straight spouse's life. The extent of the shock, anger and sadness is overwhelming. Questions for the future flood the mind. Self-esteem is rocked. It is a critical time in one's life, and the need for guidance with an experienced, accepting and non-judgmental therapist is paramount.
Relationship Counseling
Counseling for gay and lesbian couples focuses on improving communication, creating effective parenting, identifying one's needs and finding healthy and respectful ways to meet them. Individual roles in the areas of finances, chores, careers, and parenting are identified and conciliated. Blended family issues are addressed as well as dealing with extended families.
